The Top 3 Symptoms That Samson Displayed Prior To His Diabetes & Pancreatitis Diagnosis

  • Increased water consumption and urination
  • Change in appetite along with weight loss
  • Lack of interest in usual habits like walking and playing

After the initial shock from him vomiting and rushing him to the Vet, there was a week-long stay and a series of blood tess for sugar and lipase and amalyse to test the pancreatic function. The eventual diagnosis was an attack of Pancreatitis along with the discovery that Samson is a diabetic. After a month of Vet visits, the Diabetes is under control and being monitored closely.
Initially the treatment was nil orally to calm down the pancreatitis and to make sure that the high sugar levels was in fact diabetes and not more severe with the pancreas.
It took four days for Samson to eat some food and for his spirits to start lifting. By end of day five he was off the drip, eating steamed chicken only and it was healthier for him to come home with twice daily trips to the vet for blood sugar checks and insulin injections. The reason Samson came home inside of a week, is that he had never been away from us ever - so this was the first time he stayed away from us overnight and he fretted terribly once he started to recover.
It took near on six weeks to stabilse his blood sugar enough that we no longer needed to take him twice weekly for blood sugar checks. In that time there was alot of adjustments with his eating habits and this was all closely monitored.
Samson's blood sugar levels continued to be in the high teens and fluctuate and this was still in the stages of stabilisation. It was at this time we withdrew dry food comletely from his diet and within two days his sugar level were consistenly between 4-12.
We bought our own monitor and check him every 3-4 days or when he looks flat. Each test details are recorded and comments on any other issues that may be occurring, for eg. a dietary change, sore paws etc. He will continue to be closely monitored every day.
