Pancreatitis and Samson
Diagnosed with November 2007

The Pancreatitis came on quite suddenly with a noticeable change in habit ie just wanting to sleep, lethargy in the week before Samson was hospitalised. We were used to Samson's cycle of not being well when his paws swelled due to the cycling of the Sebaceous Adenitis. The night before being admitted he vomited and the morning of, he vomited six times.

Pancreatitis was the initial diagnosis and Diabetes was not even mentioned at this time although his sugar level were off the chart.

Samon had been on a couple of different courses of antibiotics in conjunction with our Vet, we were looking for a way to break the cycle of Sebaceous Adenitis. Part of the disease causes swollen blister type sores on the tops of his paws, they swell and then burst and bleed. The last type of treatment the Vet suggested was Cortisone. He lasted four days on Cortisone before we stopped the treatment. We were warned that part of the side effects of Cortisone was increased thirst and urinating and at times not being able to control the bladder, and also that Cortisone stripped would strip him of his immune system so if there was an injury or infection that treatment was to stop straight and take him to the Vets for antiobiotics to control infection.

The Cortisone treatment was stopped after day four as it was just too cruel to see him drink litres and litres of water only to step off the deck and non-stop wee and repeat this cycle again with the next half an hour. Four days later he was hospitalised.

I know this all sounds very cruel and seems like we are bad dog owners...this is not the case. What you may not understand is that when the Sebaceous Adenitis cycles and his paw swells, Samson does tend to be lethargic and not want to do much so to us it seemed part of the cycle that we were trying to break.
He was home with us within a few days as his blood sugars had stabilised enough, the pancreatitis has simmered down and now it was just a matter of monitoring the diabetes.
